1st pilot camp: topic: Possibilities of implementing entrepreneurship and STEM at the second level of elementary school

Date: 18/11/2024 – 22/11/2024

Place: ICUK, Velká Hradební 2800/54, Event Space hall

Capacity: 4 participants from UJEP

Event time: 40 hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00-16:00 or 9:00-17:00), excuse from teaching arranged with faculty management

Target:The students' goal was to propose how to apply entrepreneurship and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at the second level of primary schools. Participants will use Design Thinking methods and a project approach under the guidance of experts to propose solutions to real challenges, with an emphasis on critical and creative thinking. The program included workshops and lectures: what is STEM and entrepreneurship, how to present, and other topics. The program ended with a competition for the presentation of final projects to representatives of primary schools from the Ústí nad Labem region.

This intensive week-long program provided participants with the opportunity to develop their skills in critical thinking, teamwork, and presenting ideas.

Participant references

Kristyna Doskova, student of Faculty of Science, UJEP: “The entire BOOTCAMP was one big challenge, thanks to which I gained many new experiences in just one week. I gained a greater overview of ICUK. I learned new information about entrepreneurship, AI, Design Thinking, and presenting thanks to many workshops. I tried working and communicating in a team and how a project is created that wants to be implemented. It was nice to work with a team of people who are passionate about the same topic, have a desire to create and participate in improving the future. I also tried out what it is like to work “9 to 5” every day. What I liked most was that the program was not based on lectures and passive listening to information, but emphasized primarily the practical side, which is very often neglected at universities.”

Jakub Verner, student of the Faculty of Science, UJEP: ” This internship was a great opportunity for me to look at work in an environment other than school and focus on solving a real problem. My goal was not only to develop my creativity, but also to experience the process that is part of the events organized by the Innovation Center of the Ústí nad Labem Region (ICUK). Description of the process itself: The best part of the internship for me was brainstorming our own ideas. It was clear that we had enough information, which helped us generate ideas almost naturally. On the other hand, the most difficult part was analyzing the responses of students and teachers. At this point, we had a problem with following clearly given steps. Personally, I did not understand that the “creation of individual persons” (even before the creation of personas) does not have to be based directly on the students' responses, which caused us to sometimes “slap each other”. Description of team work: Working in a team was a new experience for me. I confirmed that I prefer to work independently. It was challenging to match the pace and direct the scattered elements of the team, which we all were at times. From this experience, I learned that next time I have to take the lead if I see that the team is starting to deviate from the topic. Here I would like to highlight the main mentor, Matouš, who was always able to kick me and direct me back on the right path, thanks to a single question regarding specific snags I had. Prototyping and feedback: I prototyped at the ZŠ Nová na Kameňáku, where we received feedback from a committed teacher. Although he was very curious about how our idea could work after implementation, he was not capable of critical evaluation. I think that we missed the opportunity to gain critical insights that could move us forward, which is a shame. What I learned: During the internship, I mainly learned the Design Thinking method, which was a new and very valuable experience for me. Furthermore, I improved my ability to analyze answers and work in a team. I also improved my skills in “professional” presentation and gained more self-confidence. I am no longer afraid to participate in larger projects because I saw that I could do it, and therefore I believe that I could do it next time. Best experiences: I consider the best part of the internship to be direct contact with the school environment, workshops focused on AI, and presenting my ideas. I also really appreciated the main mentor, Matouš, and the overall experience of the Design Thinking process. This internship was great, especially for discovering new perspectives on the problems that need to be solved. I take away an important lesson that it is crucial to find out what the needs of the people we are doing something for are. I would recommend this internship to all young people, and the younger the better. I think it would be appropriate to promote this opportunity more, for example through physical flyers at universities.”

Filipp Grigorev, student of Faculty of Arts, UJEP: “This bootcamp is an absolutely great opportunity to contribute to society and make something that they will use. During the week, we worked on a problem and tried to find a solution using our creativity and various techniques that the ICUK team taught us. I took away from the bootcamp the assurance that my ideas can be something more than just concepts in my head!”
