Reframed: A Startup That Accelerates Photovoltaic Design
Michal Polic, founder and CEO of Reframed, welcomes us with an outstretched hand and a smile. His passion for technology and renewable energy is evident from the first moment. "Our goal is to streamline and simplify the entire process - from roof orientation to project export to CAD," he says.
Startup Reframed was created with a clear goal – to make the work easier for designers who often struggle with time-consuming manual processes when designing photovoltaic power plants (PVE). Thanks to their technology, even complex systems can be designed quickly and accurately.
What used to take days, we can do in a few minutes
"A typical designer spends hours drawing and redrawing designs. We have automated this process. All they have to do is take a picture of the roof using a mobile phone or a drone, and we will create an accurate 3D model for them," explains Michal and happily adds: "We can do something that used to take days in minutes."
The technology that Reframed is developing brings significant improvements in the design of photovoltaic power plants. Thanks to augmented reality (AR), customers can view the design of photovoltaic panels directly on site - in real time and with a photorealistic display. "Customers are excited. They can see how the panels will look on their building before anything is installed," explains Michal.
When there are no people…, ideas arise
There is a story behind every technology. For Michal, this is cooperation with companies that had a problem with the lack of designers of photovoltaic power plants.
"I was inspired by the experience of the European ARTwin grant, which I led at CTU. We developed software for locating a tablet on a construction site and creating a digital copy of the environment. During this project, I realized that mobile devices have a huge potential to simplify complex processes such as PV design. At the same time, I had the opportunity to work with a company that solved the shortage of PV designers. This led me to the idea of how to use this technology to automate the design of PV plants and make the work of designers more efficient. Gradually, we began to focus on larger projects, such as industrial halls and urban buildings," he recalls the beginnings of his business idea.
Green energy at a few clicks
And they already have their first successes behind them. The startup is currently working on a project in Litoměřice, where it was necessary to focus on a historical building. "This would be almost impossible manually," says Michal and continues: "We managed it thanks to our application and the 3D model was so accurate that we were able to calculate the lighting of the roof during different parts of the year with an error of five centimeters. This allowed the Reframed team to optimize the placement of the solar panels and maximize return on investment.
The entire team from Reframed (Michal Polic, Ondřej Kafka, Anna Zderadičková) proudly mentions that, in addition to Litoměřice, they have also established cooperation with Jan Evangelista Purkyně University on another project financed by the Technological Agency of the Czech Republic. And what are the next plans of this young team? "We are working on fully automating the deployment of solar panels according to applicable standards," explains Michal. "The customer will not only be able to upload photos of the roof, but will receive a ready-made CAD diagram with the optimal distribution of panels within the next day."
Simply put, Reframed is changing the way photovoltaic power plants are designed. With their technologies, there is no longer any need for tedious manual work or complex calculations. Everything is a matter of a few clicks. "Our vision is to make it easier for people to switch to green energy. And if we can help them do that, then we're on the right track,Michal adds with a smile.
Reframed is only at the beginning of our business incubator. Despite such a short time, however, the program for budding entrepreneurs brought several important ideas to Reframed. Thanks to the valuable feedback, the company decided to adjust its focus - from the original focus on family houses, it shifted to municipalities and industrial halls.
"One of the key moments was getting our first major order, which was a huge step forward for us," shares the founder of the company. An important role in their progress was also played by the support of an experienced consultant from ICUK, Petr Jansa, whom Michal does not forget to mention: "I would like to thank him in this way, he guided us well and gave us the impetus to change the business plan.ICUK provides startups within the Startup Go! expert support which is important for them in the early stages.
