Delmax: When digitalization makes crafts more efficient

What do burst pipes, digitalization, and student education have in common? Delmax, a company specializing in building services, combines precision craftsmanship with modern approaches and a human approach. Thanks to cooperation with the Innovation Center of the Ústí nad Labem Region, this subsidiary of the Družba Housing Cooperative is moving towards digitalization and greater professionalism.

Company Delmax, an expert in the installation and maintenance of technical building equipment, takes care of water, heat and the well-being of homes in the heart of the Ústí nad Labem region. Every day, it deals with burst pipes, non-draining siphons and extensive reconstructions of heating systems. To successfully handle such orders, one key factor is needed - perfectly organized work of the entire team.

And right here the time has come for change.

Organizing orders in Excel is possible, but once you want to be more professional and efficient, you need to be clear about where people are, what they are doing, and what has been done. And that's not possible without a system, summarizes Petr Herink, the company's executive director, as the motivation for innovation.

Even in better families/companies 😉, a situation can arise where a paper order is forgotten in the car, the client is not present, their signature is missing, or the invoice does not arrive on time. This was not a common situation, but these minor shortcomings showed room for efficiency and also possible risks of unnecessary trips or lost income.

Delmax therefore thanks with support from the Platinn program from the Innovation Center of the Ústí nad Labem Region (ICUK) underwent a series of consultations that helped him define key needs and map the order flow across the company. Based on these consultations, the ICUK representative recommended a suitable expert from our database – Jindřich Josefus from Foxily, whose experience in the field of digitalization and systems development helped the company create digitalization feasibility study, built on the specific needs of the team and operation.

„"Without Jindřich, we would never have gotten to this point. He sat down with the technicians, foremen, and invoicers and mapped out what we really needed. And how to do it functionally,"“ describes managing director Petr Herink.

An application that also thinks about dirty hands

Digitalization was not to be an obstacle. The new system had to be adapted to the field workers – with simple controls, a drop-down menu and an address database. It was to offer Delmax management an overview of the progress of orders and customers a history of all work carried out on the building.

„"If someone offered me, as the chairman of the SVJ, a system where I could see all repairs and invoices together, I wouldn't look for another company,"“ says the Delmax executive with a smile and continues: „"Thanks to ICUK and an expert from the Platinn program, we were able to open up a topic that we hadn't had space for for a long time. They helped us set the path and today we know which direction we want to go."“

Young people welcome

Delmax is also actively involved in cooperation with schools and universities. "„We try to involve students in practice. One student worked on his graduation thesis as part of the Young Craftsman project, which was supported by the Ministry of Industry. The result was an economic summary of a real project – and for the student, a completed high school diploma.,"," says the company's CEO proudly.

Collaboration with young professionals also has a human dimension at Delmax – the aforementioned student had health limitations, but thanks to a supportive approach, he was able to work directly in the company and become an equal member of the team. The company also cooperates with universities, with whom it seeks ways to innovate not only technologically but also in the field of education. Delmax is thus proof that even a technically and craft-oriented company can be modern, humane and open to innovation.
