What or who is behind the Robul team from Ústí nad Labem?

Something has already been written and even filmed about the ROBUL project. However, those behind the project, who spend hundreds of hours in the workshop and training arena, and who advise and help, have not yet introduced themselves.

The name ROBUL is a combination of the words "robot" and "Ústí". This is the name of the project, which aims to support robotics, programming and modern technology enthusiasts to use their skills, abilities and teamwork to create a functional robot with which they participate in a prestigious international competition FIRST Robotics Competition in the USA.

The project covers and finances, together with partners, Innovation Center of the Ústí Region (ICUK). The idea of creating a team in Ústí nad Labem came from Václav Hudský, who participated in the FIRST competition while studying in America. He and his family also approached Martin Mata, director of ICUK, who was enthusiastic about the idea and decided to support it.

First, the team met in Secondary industrial school, Resslova in Ústí nad Labem, since January has been using the premises of two faculties of the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (UJEP): Faculty of Mechanical Engineering provided the DIGILAB shared workshop located in the CEMMTECH building, Faculty of Science areas for training grounds and obstacles.

The team began meeting already in the fall of 2023, its final lineup was formed at the beginning of this year. The competitive core of the team consists of 8 pupils and 7 mentors; the other 4 members support the team with other activities and tasks.

The ROBUL project is a pilot and test project this year. From next year, ICUK wants to expand the project throughout the Ústí Region in order to create more teams, involve other institutions such as Technical Clubs or Children's and Youth Homes, and a regional competition pre-round could be created. The winner would then represent the Ústí Region in the USA in 2025 at the FIRST Robotics Competition.

This year, the project is financed by ICUK together with partners. From autumn 2023 he approached several dozen companies and institutions in the Ústí Region and eight of them contributed a total amount of almost 500,000 crowns. Another quarter of a million crowns will be financed by ICUK. Spaces for construction and training are provided by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering free of charge. From 2025, the ROBUL project should fall under the wings of the Faculty of Science of the University of Warsaw.

In less than three weeks, the 16-person team will fly to Chicago for the competition, from which all members expect the best result, and are confident of advancing to the global finals. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for them, they undoubtedly deserve it with their skills, hundreds of hours of work, mentoring and training!
